The dermis is a
more complex layer comprising a connective tissue matrix which contains
collagen and elastin. The layer also contains a rich capillary network.
The dermis acts to support the epidermis.
Upon damage
the dermis is repaired by a process known as granulation. That is the
formulation of new blood vessels, leading to the laying down of new dermal
tissues. Healed dermis, in superficial damage, can be normal in appearance,
but for deeper injuries an abnormal appearance can result due to scar
formation.
